In World War II, American units standard issue insignia was of one general style and design, but there are many American troops patches that were quite clearly not of the standard issue design as they had much more colorful design. Here are some of the most iconic WWII Army patches:
101st Airborne Division: Screaming Eagle
82nd Airborne Division: Winged Skull
1st Infantry Division: Big Red One
3rd Infantry Division: Rock of the Marne
For instance, there were branch-specific logo for common sub-units such as regiment and battalion. They contained the unit number and another emblem that distinguished it from others, as a rule.
These WW2 Patches Army defined the theater of operations in which a soldier participated in, for example the European Theatre or the Pacific Theatre.
